Anonymous, surely you don't think that I meant that it broke the laws of nature!!!

If I thought that, I wouldn't have called this "a miracle for a rationalist" - it would have been a miracle for everyone!

  14. By the way, I find it interesting that the two skeptics who showed up to dispute my theology, didn't even bother with any good wishes!

    ReplyDelete
  15. How do you know the skeptic wasn't one of the well-wishers?

  16. As I think about it at least regarding myself, just because someone has a rational side doesn't mean that they don't have any other aspects to themselves, whether emotions, or neshmah(deeeper than emotions). One can be awed by nifloas haborei and still be a rationalist !

    Were they?

  21. Rabbi Slifkin,

Mazal Tov on the recent birth of your daughter! I hope that mother and daughter are doing well. May you have the zekhus together to bring up your daughter, and all of your children, to Torah, Chuppah, and Ma'asim Tovim!

  22. Rabbi Slifkin,

    1) Have you seen this review of Dr. Schroder's book by Yoram Bogacz ?

    http://torahexplorer.com/genesis-and-the-big-bluff/

    2) Towards the end of the review (footnote 117)he brings a quote from R. Hutner which I assume you would agree with since it can also include evolution in a purely secular-sense :

שלשה מהפכנים הכרנו: דארווין הכניס חומרנות לטבע. מרקס החדיר
חומרנות להיסטוריה, ופרויד החדיר חומרנות אל תוך נשמת האדם
    עצמו.

"We have known three revolutionaries: Darwin introduced
materialism into nature; Marx injected materialism into
history; and Freud brought materialism into the very soul
    of man..."

And keep up the good work!

  24. Mazal Tov! May you and your wife and the grandparents have much nachas from the new addition and from all your children!

  25. Thank you everyone for your good wishes!

Have you seen this review of Dr. Schroder's book by Yoram Bogacz?

    Yes.
    1. His critique of Schroeder's theological assertions/ interpretations of Torah sources are, for the most part, spot-on.
    2. His attacks on evolution lack any credibility.
    3. This statement: "Even a rudimentary acquaintance with traditional Torah sources reveals the breathtaking superiority of those individuals over our impoverished abilities" shows that he has a very selective acquaintance with traditional Torah sources. Rambam, Rabbeinu Bachya, etc., did not hold of any such thing.
    4. His ideas about the laws of nature having been different in the
    past are hopelessly naive.

(I could write a much more detailed critique, but I don't have the time.)

  26. I know rationalists believe in the miraculous in terms of fortuitously-timed natural events, but is it appropriate to wish "Mazel Tov" to a rationalist? Is it not insulting? I thought the Rambam declared the the influence of good or bad "mazalos" to be imaginary?

Anyway, best wishes on your new arrival, Rabbi Slifkin!

  27. "4. His ideas about the laws of nature having been different in the
    past are hopelessly naive."

All his ideas, or just some of them? I have a pet fondness for the theory that the speed of light was not always what it is now, as this NASA video discusses:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1mkKhn53L68

I do not know how a new theory of variable light speed would help religious folks reconcile modern science and the Bible; I'm just bringing up the topic, that's all.

  31. Mazal Tov!

May she grow up with all of your fine qualities.

Naturally, I assume the rumors that she has been thrown out her bais yaakov are false and in fact in truth she was never even accepted ;-)

    Keep up your good work.

PS you might appreciate my comment on David Morris' Tzedek-Tzedek blog re Spinoza getting more of a chance to defend himself than the other banned Nosson.
