I am having a technical problem with my computer and I was wondering if there are any computer gurus who read this blog and can help!
I am trying to upgrade from Windows Vista x64 Home Premium to Windows 7 x64 Home Premium. Compatibility is fine, everything goes fine until the last stage, when it gets to 62% in putting in the new files etc. Then it reboots, says that it's starting services, then says that the installation failed and it's rolling back to Vista. This is NOT the notorious "continuous reboot cycle" that's all over the net. Nor is it the problem that Microsoft describes here. Instead, looking at the error log (reproduced below), it seems to be a problem with a bluetooth driver - it says "BthMig: Failed to migrate bthport keys, bailing out." But my computer has no bluetooth hardware or software that I know of. I found this exact problem discussed here, but with no solution proposed. If anyone can help, I would be most grateful!

ReplyDeleteUnfortunately i don't have a specific solution to your problem but i have a suggestion that could possibly work around it.
ReplyDeleteIf you have more than one hard drive and and operating system on the the other(if not than you could install Vista there)
Use the other operating system on the other hard drive and backup all the data you wish to save.
format the harddrive. Then install Win 7 onto it. Prior to the installation go through your BIOS settings and disable anything to do with Bluetooth, though i hardly think that any bluetooth device could in any way be the cause.
A bit of a mission but i suspect the issue has to do with UPGRADING from vista to win 7.
Incidently Windows 7 is far superior to Vista(assuming you get it going), as far as microsoft goes
Are you SURE you don't have any extraneous bluetooth apps hanging around? Some other software might have installed it. Is there anything you could "uninstall" temporarily that you suspect might have latent bluetooth capabilities? It doesn't hurt to try. Music or Multimedia programs come to mind.

Maybe the Bluetooth driver is hidden. Try selecting View->Show Hidden Devices in Device Manager and look for likely suspects.
ReplyDeleteIs this a laptop? That would make it more likely that there is some sort of Bluetooth driver installed.
Try disabling some of the Bluetooth settings-- see

perhaps disabling the discoverability options.

ReplyDeleteHave you tried going to the device manager and uninstalling your USB drivers?
ReplyDeleteThat might work. Don't worry, the drivers will reinstall automatically.
BTW, to get to the device manager you should type it in right after clicking the start button.
ReplyDeleteYou might as well check for driver upgrades there as well.
I'm also assuming that you used the Windows Upgrade Advisor.

Phonon - tried that. And it's not a laptop.
I think I may wait and see if Redmond comes up with something. It seems that a lot of people are complaining about this problem right now.

Natan, Indeed, if you are willing to do a clean install you can still do it on the same hard drive.
ReplyDeleteSimply go to the partition manager on Vista, shrink the existing volume by 30-40 GB and create a new volume on that space. You can then install Windows 7 easily there.
This wont work if you're doing an upgrade.
If you are willing to clean your unit, you can always do a 'custom' install. Its qute easy. Just follow the prompts.
Never, ever, ever, ever, ever upgrade an operating system! Back up your data and do a clean install. Accept *no* other solution: this problem may be just the most visible one.
