The UK Daily Mail writes that "Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas has spoken out against violence and in favour of 'peaceful, popular resistance'." It's true, he has. He told Ha'Aretz that “I support a popular, nonviolent struggle and oppose all violence and use of weapons. I’ve made clear a number of times that I don’t want to return to the cycle of violence.”
Yet at the same time, Abbas stated that “Al-Aksa is ours and so is the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. They have no right to desecrate them with their filthy feet. We won’t allow them to do so and we will do whatever we can to defend Jerusalem... We are in Jerusalem and we will stay in it to defend our Islamic and Christian holy sites. We’re not going to leave our country... Each drop of blood that was spilled in Jerusalem is pure blood as long as it’s for the sake of Allah. Every shahid will be in heaven and every wounded person will be rewarded, by Allah’s will.”
So, yes, Abbas had, quite ludicrously, simultaneously appealed for calm and more killings. (It should also be noted that all the talk about "defending holy sites" actually refers to violently blocking Jews who simply want to pray at their own holy site, just as Moslems do.)
As I once wrote in a post entitled "Drawing Strength From Blood Libels," I personally draw inspiration from the extraordinary irrationality of the world's attitude to Israel. But we all have a duty to assist in any way possible. In the world that we live in, that means working hard to clarify the reality of the situation to anyone that might listen.
Abbas's attitude towards terrorism is the same as his predecessor, Arafat. Both play a double game. They tell the Americans and Israeli Left that they oppose terrorism in order to keep the money flowing into his Swiss bank accounts. He tells the terrorists that the supports terrorism. Thus, his position is whatever you want it to be.
ReplyDeleteFor years, the Oslo gang (Rabin, Peres, Beilin, Uri Avnery) tried to keep up the pretense that Arafat's TRUE POSITION is that he opposes terrorism, but he has to hint that he supports it "for internal reasons", i.e. Arafat is like them....he lies to his own people but he tells Peres and Beilin the truth. This was very infuriating for those of us who opposed Oslo, but, finally, FINALLY, the Israeli public has woken up and knows that Abbas IS NO LESS A TERRORIST THAN ARAFAT, no matter what he tells Kerry and Western reporters. He may feel that mass riots, like those that Arafat encouraged (he would send buses to schools and bring kids to confront the IDF and get killedl which he viewed as "helping the cause" could backfire on him, leading to his regime being ousted, but he has honored terrorists during his tenure by naming schools and streets after suicide bombers.
We should note that Arabs are prime believers in Orwellian Doublethink...i.e. believing two contradictory things at the same time. For example, Arabs will say they admire Hitler but then compare Israel to Nazis. They will say the Mossad carried out the 9/11 attacks but they they will praise the 19 "Arab Heroes" who carried it out. They will say there was no Holocaust but they they will say there was and it was a good thing. Said Erekat will tell Western reporters he is an "ancient Jebusite/Canaanite" but then tell other Arabs he is a descendent of the Arab invaders of Eretz Israel who came in the wake of the Muslim invasions after Muhammed's death (to be related to the Canaanites is dishonorable because they were pagan idol worshippers who are extinct and it is a matter of pride to be descended from the Arab/Muslim warriors who accompanied Muhammed).
This scrambled thinking that infects the Arab world is a prime reason why their societies are so backwards and they can't achieve national development like so many other Asian societies who started off with worse conditions that the Arabs and who have now surpassed them (e.g. Indian, Korea, Vietnam, China, etc, etc).
That is a succinct summary of Arab propoganda. It would be good if someone would compile such examples of PA duplicity and double-talk (one message in Arabic, and another in English to the Western world) and present it to world leaders.
DeleteI also notice that Abbas is trying to drag Christians into the fray as well--both Christian Arabs and Christians worldwide--by saying that Jews threaten their holy sites (even though the Christian population in PA-controlled areas has shrunk dramatically.) So far, that brainwashing isn't working. I'm not aware of any Christian Arab terror attacks as of yet.
Doublethink is a trademark of anti-semites (and racists more generally) all around. The line "the holocaust never happened... hitler should have finished the job" is one that infuriates me no end in its clear self contradictory nature but is nevertheless expressed proudly time and again.

But, if I was an Arab, I don't think I would feel at home in a country where the national anthem is Hatikva. We need to give them their own country. Otherwise there will never be peace.

DeleteFrom the rampant anti-Semitism in the Palestinian media and education system, giving them their own country will only exacerbate the situation. Is it not obvious how easy it is for Abbas to inflame the entire situation with a few lies and distortions? (Is Israel really destroying Al Aqsa? Are they really breaking the status quo?) And have you investigated why Abbas is engaging in these lies?
You also fail to mention how difficult it is to meet the Palestinian demands so that they can have "their own country". All the previous offers have never been enough. Even if Zehava Gal-On of Meretz were Prime Minister (G-d Forbid), she wouldn't be able to meet all those demands.
A hopelessly complicated and banal situation, Mr Ben David. As we all know the next step in this macabre theatre will be international and now, US, pressure on Israel to make a gesture for peace, to show good faith and courage because this time, surely, big-hearted generosity will usher in peace, with two happy states living side by side. Or something like that.
DeleteBut now that the Israeli public is starting to clue in on the stark reality that Oslo and the two-state (3-state, or 4-state, counting the PA, Hamas, Hezbolla and Jordan) farce are dead? that decades of concessions only made everything even mote lethal and that Abbas is just another terrorist thug, one now wonders when, rather than if, the Istaeli government will reconsider defending Abbas' behind from his own people and Hamas. Abbas, who has managed to vacuum up nearly half of the foreign aid for himself and his cronies, barely controls the neighbourhood around his own headquarters, so it's not as if he is of any further use to Israel. Letting Arab nature and talents take their course will be characteristicslly and predictably ugly, but surely an intra-Palestinian civil war and the collapse of the current "government" cannot be worse for Israel than the domestic and international situation now?

ReplyDeleteThere is far more subtle stuff going on. Read the reports carefully. Arab deaths are reported as "killed", Jews as "died" as if the Jew had a heart attack right before the Arab knifed him so it really doesn't count.
We are our own worst enemy in focusing so much on what others are saying. I feel this is true in politics as well. The losers worry about the other side, debunking them, pointing out inconsistencies, etc. The winners don't let things like that bother them, and also don't bother with what the other side is saying. Sad, but true.
ReplyDeleteNot saying there's no room for it. But the focus should be on our own message, and not on the duplicity of Arabs or the media. (Example: the Julian Edelman video showing highlights of his trip to Israel does a lot more for Israel than a hundred articles showing the lies of the New York Times. To the extent any of all this matters at all and we accept the premise that people can be molded, this is the way to go.)
With all the anger and pain we have to suffer because of this vile Arab terrorist onslaught, it is important to keep the big picture in mind....and that is: THE ARABS ARE DESTROYING THEMSELVES.
ReplyDeleteAfter the Yom Kippur War and the big increase in oil prices that followed, many felt in Israel that the Arabs would invest their money in infrastructure and education and build up their societies and that Israel, which suffered a loss of confidence due to the high casualties of the war (in spite of the great military victory which was far more impressive than the Six-Day War) and that the Arabs would be able to surpass Israel in technology and in military capability.
What actually happened?.....the Arabs invested their money in spreading fanatic Wahabi Islam and in weapons. This ideology and the weapons are now being used by the Arabs to slaughter one another. The education system did not receive the money, the Arabs fell further and further behind, Israel, on the other hand has pulled ahead. The Arab birth rate is plummeting. The fact that Israelis now have to fear contact with any Arab, added to the extremist, pro-terrorist propaganda of both the Palestinian Authority AND the Israeli Arab Knesset members will cause economic damage to their own community, but they obviously don't care. Iraq and Syria were viewed in the 1970's and 1980's as major regional powers which were major threats to Israel have both disintegrated, and the other regional power, Egypt, is now a basket case with no hope for its young people. Around the world, non-Muslims see the fratricidal slaughter and the export of terror to Europe, America and Africa and, every day more and more people hate Islam and Muslims, in spite of the grovelling American and Europeans leaders do to them.
Thus, if we keep cool, do not panic, do what we must, be firm WE WILL WIN!
Unless, while burning their own house down, the flames spread to ours...

It never ceases to amaze me how 'rationalists' who claim to believe in evolution come out with such convoluted explanations for why the Arab world is so dysfunctional and barbarous when the explanation is staring them in the face. Has it ever occurred to you that Arabs do things that appear completely stupid and say things that appear completely stupid because they are, in fact, stupid?
