Letter to CNN

To: CNN

Your latest headline, "Cease-fire attempt ends as Israeli airstrikes resume", is gravely misleading at best and utterly false at worst. As your article admits, Hamas never accepted the ceasefire and continued to fire rockets at Israel. After enduring several hours of rocket fire, Israel returned to striking Hamas. The blame for the lack of an enduring ceasefire is thus certainly with Hamas. Why does your headline instead mention Israel?

Natan Slifkin

UPDATE: They now changed it to "Cease fire fails; Israel responds to attacks". Better, though not perfect.

UPDATE #2: They changed it again, this time to "Cease-fire effort collapses as rockets, airstrikes continue". This is a step backwards again, implying that the blame is to be equally shared.

  1. The changed it. As of now it says "Cease fire fails; Israel responds to attacks". Still not the more truthful, Hamas rejects Israels cease fire offer.

  2. A local Pennsylvanian newspaper headline said Gazans pleed because of Israel impelling them despite Hamas pleading for them to stay. It really was the other way around. Hamas impelled whoever they could to stay whereas Israel was in essence pleading for Gazans to flee. Israel only impelled fleeing in the sense it would attack.

  4. They also followed it with a gruesomely titled piece about the kids who murdered that palestinian child, entitled: A Focused Hunt for a Victim to Avenge Israelis’ Deaths just so you don't forget what sick bloodthirsty animals the Jews are. (it's not now on the front page, but it was there all day)

They are just doing propaganda for the other side now. They also run this piece http://www.nytimes.com/2014/07/16/opinion/a-palestinian-saved-my-life.html?_r=0
which ends with a 'cute' quote: "Israelis must remember to fight terror and not the Palestinians,"
    as if we ever forgot...

  5. shkoyach. you think CNN is misreporting in favor of the arabs, and the arabs think the press is misreporting in favor of Israel!

  6. No need to post this if ten other guys do, but the latest headline is "'Failure is not an option': But Israel, Hamas can't agree on cease-fire". At a different news source, I found the exact same article, crediting CNN, but with the title "'Failure not an option': Gaza peace elusive"

  7. ksil, what is the point of your comment, except to make you sound like you believe that both sides are *equally* right?

Hilarious. Israel must fight an abstract noun instead of its enemies. Or it would be hilarious if clueless Bibi didn't believe in this tripe.

  9. Do you really think changing a headline makes a differenceJuly 16, 2014 at 2:49 PM

At least they put "rockets" before "airstrikes" which in their mind equals: Hamas broke it first, Israel after.

  10. R. Slifkin: While you were gone, there was some discussion of the propriety of your call for Hashem and the IDF to "avenge the blood of the murdered Jewish boys." (See here: http://www.rationalistjudaism.com/2014/06/so-sad.html?showComment=1404742830978#c1387177219049978684 for the end of the thread). It would be good to know whether you still think this was the proper statement to make.

  12. Update #3: They now changed it to "'Failure is not an option': But Israel, Hamas can't agree on cease-fire"

On the bright side, the first title would have attracted more anti Israeli and left wingers. The video does show how Israel takes maximum precautions to avoid civilian casualties. A must see by the critics.
Maybe that was their original intent.

  13. The Arabs don't think at all. Maybe 40 years ago, but today they are well aware of the leftist slant of the media, and plays to it as best they can.

    Rabbi,
I have noticed the last few days you have been very concerned (understandably) about the dire situation in Israel.
But where were you the last 2 weeks?
When rockets were raining down on Israel you were posting selfies of yourself on a Cessna with its pilot, completely oblivious that half a million jews were in their safe rooms.
On the day of the funeral of our 3 boys you felt it ok to show pictures of your group with hippos as if am Yisrael had no other concern.
And when Haredim (who you so often accuse of not sharing the burden) from Bnei Brak to Baltimore were praying for the kidnapped mizrachi boys you were showing the world how to go to sleep with a cheetah.
Perhaps its time to learn a thing or two from the haredim, how to feel with the pain of the nation, something which you utterly failed at.

He was touring Africa. I don't think that it's wrong to post about other things, as long as one also posts about the matzav (which this blog did).
